Mosques Mihrab
Mihrab: The Spiritual Center of the Mosque
The mihrab is a semicircular niche set into the qibla wall of a mosque—the wall that faces Mecca, indicating the direction Muslims should face during prayer. As both a spiritual focal point and a key architectural feature, the mihrab emphasizes the sanctity of the prayer space and often showcases elaborate artistic decoration.
In the Qur’an, the term mihrab refers to a place of worship or sanctuary, highlighting its significance in Islamic tradition. Mihrabs are commonly adorned with calligraphy, geometric patterns, and tile work, emphasizing their spiritual and visual importance within the mosque.
A unique historical example is the Masjid al-Qiblatayn ("Mosque of the Two Qiblas") in Medina. It originally had two mihrabs: one facing Jerusalem, the initial qibla, and the other facing Mecca, following the command revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to change the direction of prayer. In modern times, the mihrab facing Jerusalem was removed during renovation, leaving only the one directed toward Mecca.
