Renovation of Imam Al-Maturidi Mausoleum with Traditional Tile Art
The Imam Abu Mansur Al-Maturidi Mausoleum project in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, involved the renovation of the monument’s main dome through the design, handmade production, and installation of traditional Islamic ceramic tiles. Inspired by historic Samarkand architecture, EITile was awarded the design, manufacture, and installation of handcrafted seven-color tiles, mosaic decorations, and glazed ceramic elements for the main dome, preserving the spiritual and architectural heritage of one of Central Asia’s most significant Islamic monuments. The project combined authentic Islamic tile craftsmanship with precise architectural execution to ensure historical accuracy, durability, and visual harmony. Before installation of the planned exterior decorative tile works, the architectural concept was revised following a visit by the President of Uzbekistan, who requested that the building façade be changed from brick to white stone. To maintain harmony with the new façade design, the planned exterior mosaic tile application was replaced with stone decorative elements, while EITile's renovation work on the main dome remained based on traditional handmade ceramic tile craftsmanship.
